Who has not used a color picker while working on almost any software ? Whether it is Powerpoint or MS-Word being used to write a letter we are always using colors for background or text. By using the color picker.

There are various ways to pick a color. I use mouse as a preference ( probably you too). One can also type in the RGB values ( most technical people do this). And yet another option is to write in HSB value. You can see RGB and HSB letters above in the color picker. HSB is described below.

H- Hue
S-Saturation
B-Brightness

Hue, Saturation and Brightness

If you are like me who has never paid attention to HSB (or HSL) because it looked all too confusing, check this brilliant comparison from the Tech Museum that makes the concept so easy to understand.

Most of us do not pay attention to HSB. You can click here to easily understand the concept and the comparison.

  • Hue could tell the difference between a ripe fruit and a raw one.
  • Saturation could tell the difference between two glasses of whiskys – one with soda and other with water.
  • Brightness  is obviously brightness. It can tell the difference between a dark and bright shades of any object.

Hue is really the the actual color. Brightness means as to how much black (or white) is mixed up in the color. Saturation shows the amount of grey in a color.  If  saturation value is  zero then it means that it is mostly grey. Brightness=100 means that it is completely white.
